The Role of Technology in Music Creation
For decades, the world of music, especially electronic music and DJ culture, has thrived on technological innovation. From the earliest synthesizers and drum machines to sophisticated digital audio workstations and sampling techniques, technology has always been an integral part of the creative process. Every great DJ and producer leverages tools and samples to craft unique soundscapes. In this rich lineage, Artificial Intelligence is simply the latest technological element in this continuous chain of artistic creation.
My Creative Process: Human Art with AI Tools
As an artist, my creative process is deeply personal and multifaceted. I pour hours of editing AI music, selecting musical elements, combining prompts, refining and adapting AI-generated segments, writing original lyrics, providing artistic direction, equalization, and mastering into my work. In this journey, Artificial Intelligence has become a valuable tool, an extension of my artistic expression, just as a sampler or a synth might be for another artist.
Why Deezer’s AI Labeling Is Problematic
Recently, Deezer implemented a new system to label music tracks that utilize Artificial Intelligence. While I understand platforms may be navigating the evolving landscape of AI in music, the specific way this labeling was applied deeply offended my artistic integrity and disrespected my creative process. It felt like a categorization that failed to recognize the extensive human effort and artistry involved. It appears Deezer assimilates AI with fraud (see Deezer’s official article here).
My Irreversible Decision and What It Means
This wasn’t a decision taken lightly. After careful consideration, I have chosen to remove 100% of my discography from Deezer. For me, this decision is irreversible. My tracks will be gradually removed from their platform over the next approximately 30 days.
This move is a direct reflection of my commitment to my art and to the principles of creative freedom. I believe that the use of technology, including AI, as a tool to enhance human creativity should be respected, not diminished or ambiguously categorized. I will not accept my creative process being flagged as “fraud”.
